Purdue Northwest Athletics has announced the promotion of Claire Schapker to Interim Head Coach of the softball program, following the resignation of former head coach Tristan Zink.
Schapker, who is entering her third season with the program, has been instrumental in the team's continued growth and success over the past two seasons. As assistant coach, she helped guide the program to a GLIAC Tournament appearance in 2024 and has played a key role in maintaining the hardworking culture both on and off the field.
"Claire Schapker is a rising star in collegiate softball" said Rick Costello, Director of Athletics at Purdue Northwest. "She has a clear vision for building a competitive, student-athlete-focused program, and her recruiting and leadership experience make her the ideal coach to lead Purdue Northwest during this transition. Claire has been an integral part of our softball program's success and led the program during the Fall 2024 semester."
During her time as assistant coach, Schapker contributed to record-setting achievements in both batting and pitching categories, while also helping develop multiple All-GLIACÂ selections and Midwest All-Region honorees.
Prior to joining PNW, Schapker served as an assistant coach at Calumet College of St. Joseph, where she focused on pitching and recruiting. Her tenure with the Crimson Wave included two CCAC Conference Tournament appearances during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. She began her coaching career as a recruiting assistant before transitioning into a full-time assistant role in fall 2021.
"I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to continue growing the PNW Softball program on and off the field. Thank you to Rick Costello and Tom Albano for the opportunity to continue being a part of Purdue Northwest Athletics," said Schapker. "Thank you to Tristan Zink for her leadership, mentorship, and friendship to me over the last couple of years and for helping put PNW Softball on the map. I am excited to take this next step with the team and to continue promoting a competitive and positive team culture."
A former standout pitcher, Schapker was a four-year member of the Calumet College softball team and a three-year starter in the circle. She earned her bachelor's degree in business management in 2019 and later completed her Master of Public Affairs degree with a concentration in Nonprofit Management from Indiana University, along with a Graduate Certificate in Philanthropic Studies from IUPUI in 2021.
In addition to her coaching experience, Schapker previously served as Sports Information Director, Senior Woman Leader, and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee advisor at Calumet College, showcasing her commitment to the overall student-athlete experience.
Schapker will begin her interim duties immediately as the program prepares for the upcoming 2026 season.
