Pride Baseball Falls to Parkside in Conference Matchup, 6-3

On Sunday, the Purdue Northwest baseball team hosted Parkside in Hammond for a Conference match up. Despite a late push, the Pride came up short, falling 6-3 as Parkside capitalized on key opportunities early in the game.

The Breakdown
  • Braylon Holland (Hobart, Ind./Andrean) drove in two runs for the Pride, including an RBI double in the fifth inning.
  • Dan Puplava (Portage, Ind./Portage) added an RBI
  • AJ Reid (Highland, Ind./Highland) recorded two hits, including a double.
  • Owen Walkowiak (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) was strong out of the bullpen, tossing four scoreless innings and striking out six.
  • Eric Beck (Manteno, Ill/Manteno) followed with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out one.
  • Parkside's P. Fusek led the offense with a three-run double in the fourth inning.
  • C. Storti not only added an RBI double but also earned the save with two scoreless innings on the mound.
  • N. Gerritson picked up the win, allowing just one earned run over six innings pitched.
  • The game remained scoreless through the first inning before Parkside struck first in the second, with C. Storti doubling through the left side to bring in a run.
  • In the fourth, the Rangers opened up a 4-0 lead with P. Fusek's bases-clearing double to center field.
  • Parkside added two more in the fifth, taking advantage of a bases-loaded walk and a double play that allowed another run to score, extending their lead to 6-0.
  • Purdue Northwest responded in the bottom of the fifth when Braylon Holland (Hobart, Ind./Andrean) doubled to right field, scoring Drake Ballard (Louisville, Ky./Martha Laynes Collins). Holland later came home on a groundout by Dan Puplava (Portage, Ind./Portage), cutting the deficit to 6-2.
  • In the seventh, Nick Robinson (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) scored on a ground out by Holland to make it 6-3, but that was as close as the Pride would get. Despite strong late-inning pitching, the early damage proved too much to overcome.
