Softball defeats Shepherd in Day 3 split of Florida Spring Games

The Purdue Northwest softball team split Day 3 of the Florida Spring Games on Saturday afternoon. The Pride fought hard till the end of the near comeback against Saint Martin's in Game 1, 18-11, and then rebounded in Game 2 by defeating Shepherd, 7-2.

Game 1 - vs. Saint Martin's
The Breakdown
  • Junior Amanda DeBoer (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian) led the Pride going a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with one RBI and scored three runs.
  • Sophomore Emma Fair (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) and junior Olivia Hernandez (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Central Catholic) each added two hits and two RBIs.
  • Freshman Jadyn Ramer (Lafayette, Ind./Harrison), senior Darcy Barkauskas (St. John, Ind./Lake Central), and senior Myah Stuckey (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) each notched two hits and one RBI.
  • Freshman Giuliana Giordano (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) chipped in one hit with two RBIs.
  • Freshman Jordyn Roop (Hudson, Ill./University) earned the start on the mound for the Pride pitching the first few innings while fellow freshman Abbey Bond (Saint John, Ind./Andrean) and sophomore Hannah Rafferty-Flatter (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) each saw time pitching for Purdue Northwest.
  • Agena led Saint Martin's with three hits and five RBIs scoring two runs.
  • Leverington started in the circle for the Saints pitching the first two innings and grabbing the win allowing two hits with one run.
  • The Pride grabbed the early lead scoring one run in the first inning to go up 1-0.
  • Saint Martin's took the lead scoring five runs in the second inning and take a 5-1 advantage.
  • The third inning was all Saints as they tallied ten runs to grow their lead to 15-1 and seemingly have the game in their control.
  • Purdue Northwest never quit, the squad chipped away at their deficit scoring one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth to cut it to 15-10.
  • Saint Martin's did grab some extra runs in the seventh to increase their lead to 18-11.
  • The Pride did take a run in the seventh but couldn't salvage another as the team's efforts fell short in the end, 18-11.
  • Purdue Northwest ended the game with 17 total hits.
Game 2 - Shepherd
The Breakdown
  • Barkauskas led the Pride with one hit and two RBIs that included her first homerun of the season.
  • DeBoer and Madura each added one hit and one RBI.
  • Fair, Hernandez, Ramer, and senior Saylem Smith (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) each chipped in one hit during the game.
  • Freshman Rylan Gick (West Lafayette, Ind./William Henry Harrison) started in the circle for Pride and pitched all seven innings allowing only two runs on seven hits while striking out five batters to earn the complete game win. She also had a career day at the plate tallying two hits with one RBI and one run scored.
  • Nolan led Shepherd with two hits and one RBI.
  • McBride started on the mound for the Rams and pitched the first two innings allowing four runs off three hits.
  • Shepherd took the lead in the first inning notching a run to go up 1-0.
  • The Pride took their first lead when Barkauskas launched a two run homer in the second inning to make it 2-1, while also recording another run to make the score 3-1.
  • Purdue Northwest scored a run in the third and two in the fourth inning to increased their lead to 6-1.
  • The Pride tallied their last run in the seventh to make it a 7-1 game.
  • The Rams did score a run in the seventh inning but couldn't muster anymore runs as the Pride pitching and defense stood strong to earn the 7-2 victory.
