Men's Basketball drops overtime heartbreaker to Saginaw Valley State

The Purdue Northwest Men's Basketball team dropped another overtime heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon to Saginaw Valley State in GLIAC play, 103-100.

The Basics

Laborers' Local 41 Player of the Game: Senior Jailen Nelson (San Diego, Calif./Carlsbad) - led the Pride with 24 points going 8-of-17 from the field and grabbed five rebounds with two assists.

Inside The Numbers
  • Junior Collin Albert (Cleveland, Ohio/Lutheran High School East) scored 16 points dishing three assists with three steals.
  • Junior Quinton McCullough (Champaign, Ill./Mahomet Seymour) tallied 14 points off the bench and snatched a team-leading eight rebounds.
  • Senior Dalton Gayman (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) chipped in 11 points with five boards.
  • As a team, the Pride ended the game shooting 35-of-67 (52.2%) from the floor and went 13-of-30 (43.3%) from deep. The team also notched 16 assists with six steals and one block on the defensive side.
  • Toodles Seal led Saginaw Valley State with a game-high 34 points going 13-of-22 with nine rebounds.
  • Freddie McIntosh tallied 25 points for the Cardinals.
  • As a team, Saginaw Valley State finished the contest going 37-of-67 (55.2%) from the field and shot 8-of-27 (29.6%) from behind the arc. They recorded nine assists and four steals with two blocks.
The Breakdown
  • Both teams started the contest out strong battling to a 20-20 tie in the first eight minutes.
  • SVSU then gained control with a 14-0 run to take a 34-20 lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half.
  • The Cardinals still held onto their double-digit advantage for the remainder of the first and went into halftime up 48-36.
  • Purdue Northwest came out of halftime using the first eight minutes to fight their way back to tie the game up at 61-61.
  • The final ten minutes were a back-and-forth affair with each team hitting big shot after big shot.
  • In the final minute and the scored tied 83-83, Albert hit a layup to give the Pride a 85-83 lead.
  • Seal then responded with a basket of his own to tie the game up at 85-85 with 30 seconds left in the game.
  • Albert then would hit another clutch layup to put the Pride up 87-85 with ten seconds left, but Purdue Northwest committed a foul on a two-point against Seal and he drained his two free throws to send the game into overtime, 87-87.
  • The Cardinals started the overtime period fast taking a 97-91 lead with less then two minutes remaining.
  • The Pride battled back to cut their deficit to 97-96 with 20 seconds left in overtime.
  • After SVSU hit two free throws to go up 99-96, Purdue Northwest committed a costly turnover to give the ball back.
  • The Cardinals though missed their two free throws and then put the Pride at the line to split two free throws to make it 99-97.
  • SVSU then hit two free throws to extend the lead to 101-97 with less then ten seconds left.
  • Will Ashford (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) did end up hitting a half-court shot to give the Pride a glimmer of hope to make it 101-100 with one second left.
  • The Cardinals ended up knocking down two more free throws with 0.4 seconds left but not enough time for the Pride to give off one last shot and falling in a heartbreaker, 103-100.
  • The Purdue Northwest bench outscored the Cardinals, 38-18.
  • Both teams had ten points each with points off turnovers.
Post-Game Quote from Head Coach Boomer Roberts:
"Tough loss tonight, that's really been a microcosm of our season unfortunately. We gave ourselves a great chance to win this game, but had a couple tough things go against us that we couldn't overcome. There's a lot of season left and we'll continue to keep working."
