D2 Hockey battles hard but falls to Saginaw Valley 6-4

The Purdue Northwest ACHA D2 Hockey took on Saginaw Valley State this Saturday where the Pride would battle hard but come up short falling to the Cardinals 6-4

The Basics 
  • Records: Purdue Northwest (5-3), Saginaw Valley (2-1) 
  • Location: University Center, Michigan
  • Single weekend game
Inside the Numbers 
  • Freshman Savva Verbetskii (Ekaterinburg, Russia) led the Pride with one goal and an assist.
  • Jacob Behnke (South Elgin, Ill.), Brandon Mcneal, and Cole Bocock also contributed a goal.
  • Nick Mathurin (Chicago, Ill.), Michael Tucker (Frankfort, Ill.), Anthony Caserta (Perth, Ontario/Perth District Collegiate Institute), Jt Verdino, and Leon Swiatkowski (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) each dished out an assist.
  • Senior Kyle Fritz (Montreal, Canada/Vanguard HS) played all sixty minutes in the goal for the Pride and had 48 saves. 
  • Liam Donnelly played all sixty minutes in goal for Saginaw and had 35 saves. 
 
The Breakdown 
  • In Period 1, both teams displayed their offensive power. Saginaw Valley State University saw goals from Logan O'Flanagan and Tyler Russell, while the Pride responded with goals from Cole Bocock and Jacob Behnke (South Elgin, Ill.). Saginaw and the Pride continued trading goals, the Cardinals finding the back of the net and Savva Verbetskii (Ekaterinburg, Russia) finding the net, before Saginaw added another goal to take a 4-3 lead.
  • In Period 2, The Cardinals scored the game-winning power-play to make it 5-3.
  • In Period 3, Saginaw Valley State University extended their lead with an insurance goal. The Pride would add a power-play goal from Brandon Mcneal but time would expire giving Saginaw a 6-4 victory..
