HAMMOND, Ind. – Purdue Northwest fell twice in Friday's doubleheader against No. 21 Grand Valley State at RUSH Physical Therapy Field. The Lakers won the first game 9-0 and held on for a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.
PNW dropped to 24-14 overall and 13-9 in GLIAC play, while GVSU extended its win streak to 13 and improved to 38-5 (23-3 GLIAC).
GAME 1: GRAND VALLEY ST. 9, PURDUE NORTHWEST 0
The Lakers scored four in the first inning, including a pair of unearned runs, and rode their ace Hannah Beatus for the win. Beatus (18-2) struck out nine and only surrendered three hits in the five-inning contest.
Aubrey Shroyer (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon),
Ashley Bravo (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) and
Myah Stuckey (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) each singled to lead the Pride offense.
The Lakers added two runs in the second and three more in the fourth, totaling 13 hits in the opening contest. There was only one extra-base hit in the game, a chopper down the third-base line hit by GVSU's Taylor Rieger that scored the first two runs of the game.
Emma Hill (Holmes Beach, Fla./Cary-Grove (IL)) tossed two frames after making the start in the circle, while
Maddison Roop (Hudson, Ill./University) three the final three innings.
GAME 2: GRAND VALLEY ST. 3, PURDUE NORTHWEST 2
PNW had the tying run 60 feet away with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't complete the comeback.
The Pride overcame an early 1-0 deficit with two runs in the second inning. A leadoff single from
Allison Arnold (Tucson, Ariz./Naperville North) and double from
Amanda Noblett (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) put two in scoring position.
Kara Aloisio (North Aurora, Ill./Yorkville) put down a successful squeeze bunt as Arnold made a great slide past the catcher. Then, Shroyer's sac fly to center brought home Noblett to put PNW in the lead 2-1.
In the fifth, GVSU pieced together four consecutive singles including a pair of infield hits to plate the go-ahead runs.
Gabby Paliska (Palos Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East (Wisconsin-Green Bay)) struck out three in three innings of relief, but was charged with the tough-luck loss in the circle. Roop started the game as the opener while May took over in the second and logged three innings of work. The Pride pitchers didn't walk a batter and only allowed one extra-base hit in similar fashion as the first game.
Noblett went 2 for 3 to lead the Pride at the plate including a leadoff single to spark the seventh-inning rally. It was her 11th multi-hit game of the season.
GVSU's Genesis Eggart (5H, 2ER, 8K)earned the complete-game victory and improved to 13-1 in the circle.
