WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Purdue Northwest softball team fell 5-1 to Post University (CT) in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader at DiamondPlex.
Both teams produced five hits in the contest but Post (1-0) was able to make the hits count, scoring at least one run on every one of its base knocks.
PNW got on the board first with
Myah Stuckey's (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) two-out RBI infield single with the bases loaded in the second inning. That gave the Pride an early 1-0 lead similar to the morning game against IUP.
Starter
Maddison Roop (Hudson, Ill./University) retired the first seven batters she faced, and looked dominant through the early going, but a pair of back-to-back walks on close pitches came back to haunt as Post's Bailee Zaccaro tied the game with a two-out single in the third.
Roop (1-1) finished four-and-a-third innings of work with four strikeouts, four walks and four hits allowed.
Selena Michko (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) made her second appearance in the circle to close out the game.
The Pride stranded a pair of runners in the fourth, before the Eagles tacked on another run in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead. The next inning, Post's Allyson Wallauer and Brianna Koref delivered with clutch back-to-back RBI doubles to extend the Eagles' lead to 5-1.
Koref (1-0) earned the win inside the circle on Opening Day for the Eagles. The southpaw struck out three and walked three with the only run marked unearned.
Amanda Noblett (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) led the way and reached base three times with a pair of hits and a walk. Michko, Stuckey and
Sydney Siedentopf (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) each registered a hit.
