MIDLAND, Mich. – The Purdue Northwest women's basketball team (8-18, 5-14 GLIAC) took a 12-point lead early in the second quarter, but ultimately fell short at Northwood by a 75-67 tally on Thursday night.
How it happened: PNW torched the nets from beyond the arc in the first half hitting on six of their first eight attempts and finishing the first half by going 7-for-11 from three-point range.
The torrid performance by the Pride culminated in a 12-point lead when
Reagan Courier (Delavan, Wis./Big Foot) knocked down one of her two three-pointers inside the E.W. Bennett Sports Center with 6:39 to go in the second quarter for a 36-24 PNW lead.
Northwood (17-9, 11-8 GLIAC) would end any concern of a blowout when the Timberwolves held PNW scoreless over the next 6:06 of action until
Anjel Galbraith (Vallejo, Calif./Salesian College Prep) connected on a long range shot to go up 39-34 with 0:33 remaining in the half.
A push-pull performance by both teams in the third quarter would see PNW take a 47-40 lead on a
Dash Shaw (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) layup with 5:32 remaining in the stanza, but Northwood clamped down on defense and converted when needed en route to tying the game at 49-49 on a pair of free throws at the 1:08 mark of the quarter.
Northwood took its first lead since the first quarter with 9:03 left in the game on a Jayla Strickland layup to put the Timberwolves up 53-51.
The lead would build to as many as 14 as the Pride would eventually fall 75-67 and see their season come to an end.
Shaw led all scorers with 25 points and added in four rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block for one of her best all-around outings of her young career.
Courier (11) and Galbraith (10) joined Shaw in the double-digit scoring column. One performance that can't be overlooked is
Abbie McDowell's (Tecumseh, Mich./Tecumseh) rebounding, which helped limit Northwood's second-chance point opportunities. She hauled in 10 defensive rebounds on the night.
Ellie Taylor led the way for Northwood with 23 points.
