The Purdue University Northwest women's volleyball team fell to host Missouri S&T and Missouri Western in Friday's season-opening matches at the Miner Invitational.
PNW dropped the first match of the day to the Miners: 26-24, 25-14 & 25-9, as three freshmen made their debuts.
The Pride battled from a 6-1 deficit in the opening set and built a 16-12 lead, but the Miners rattled off nine of the next 10 points to take a 21-17 advantage. PNW clawed back to even the set at 23-23 but couldn't regain the lead.
Missouri S&T kept the momentum and never trailed over the final two sets.
Freshman
Riley Kraiza led the way with a team-high seven kills. Three players recorded a team-high eight digs including sophomore
Summer Clark, freshman
Mallorey Madson and freshman
Olivia Brooke. Brooke handed out 13 assists in her first collegiate match at setter. Senior
Caleigh Smith and sophomore
Erica Brohm each had two aces.

Purdue Northwest women's volleyball came up short against Missouri Western in a neutral-site match Thursday at the Miner Invitational.
The final set scores were 25-21, 25-18 & 25-9 in favor of the Griffons.
PNW jumped ahead early with the first two points and led 3-1 following a Brohm kill.
Bryanna Moonen's kill put the Pride ahead 10-9 as the two teams stayed within striking distance of each other the entire opening set. Eventually the Griffons held off the Pride and pulled out the narrow set victory after another Moonen kill sliced PNW's late deficit to just two, 22-20. The Griffons would record a 25-21 triumph.
PNW again raced out to a 2-0 lead in the second set while looking to even the match. However, Missouri Western would score 10 unanswered points and remained out in front the rest of the way.
The Pride improved offensively in the second match of the day, posting an overall .178 team hitting percentage. Brohm (9.5 points) led with eight kills while Kraiza (7.5 points) produced seven kills and Moonen finished with six. Clark contributed five kills and seven digs, as Brooke dished out 26 assists. Madson recorded a team-high 22 digs.
UP NEXT
PNW will play another doubleheader tomorrow at the Miner Invitational with matchups against Upper Iowa (8:30 a.m.) and Arkansas Monticello (4 p.m.).
