INDIANAPOLIS – The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team began play at the 2021 Division II Women's Midwest ITA Regional Championships, hosted by UIndy this weekend.
Singles Main A Draw featured PNW's
Sienna Lopez and
Oona Kintscher on Saturday.
Lopez advanced to the Round of 32 following a thrilling victory over Northwood's Iryna Trystan. Lopez fell in the opening set (6-7) but bounced back in the second (7-6) as both were decided by tiebreakers. Lopez would end up taking the deciding tiebreaker set, 10-6, and moved on to face Lewis' Nefeli Zafeiri in the next round. Zafeiri, who was seeded fourth, won 6-1, 6-2.
Kintscher went up against UIndy's Anna Novikova in the opening round, the region's top seed, and fell by scores of 6-1 and 6-3, but gave the All-American her most competitive singles match of the day.
Lopez and Kintscher teamed up to face the top-seeded team from UIndy, Novikova and Bella Dunlap. The Pride duo lost 8-3 in that Main A Draw match, but moved on to the Consolation Stage, where they captured an 8-3 victory of their own over Sage Hills and Grace Sueflohn from Lewis. Lopez and Kintscher will continue play in the Consolation Quarterfinals tomorrow against Elsa Pascual and Lola Cincunegui from Southwest Baptist.
Doubles Main B Draw included a pair of wins from
Nicole Uzcategui and
Patricia Dizon.
The PNW teammates won 8-3 over Ferris State's Amelia Laverdiere and Patricia Martin Gomez, which was followed by another victory for the Pride duo against Findlay's Laura Brito and Luciana Pereyra in a close match, 8-6. Uzcategui and Dizon will compete against Davenport's Isabella Carofano and Kumiko Yamaguchi in Sunday's semifinal.
PNW's
Salma Raslan and
Hayley Tsuen matched up against the top seed in the Doubles Main B Draw and fell, 8-3. The Pride teammates came back in the Consolation Stage and played an entertaining match against Hillsdale's Sophia Spinazze and Julia Wagner, before falling by a narrow decision, 9-7.
