SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Purdue University Northwest women's volleyball team earned its first win of the season Friday night at the UIS Capital Classic following a sweep over Lake Erie College. The well-earned victory marks the first win for
Bill Schepel as head coach of the Pride.
Â
PNW defeated Lake Erie 25-17, 25-18 and 25-17 to bounce back from an earlier loss in the day to Upper Iowa (25-18, 25-19, 25-11). The Pride moved to 1-5 overall and continue the weekend tournament with a pair of matches tomorrow.
Â
Five PNW players had at least four kills in the nightcap as freshmen
Riley Kraiza (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and
Olivia Brooke (Logansport, Ind.), and sophomore
Erica Brohm (Bettendorf, Iowa) paced the offense. Kraiza posted 13 kills and eight digs along with an ace and pair of block assists. Brooke was stellar from her setter position, dishing out 34 assists with three kills, five digs and three block assists. Brohm was unstoppable and logged a .714 hitting percentage with 10 kills on 14 attacks.
Â
The Pride also received key plays from sophomore
Lauren Sanders (Indianapolis, Ind.), who recorded six kills, five block assists and two digs, while sophomore
Summer Clark (Chicago, Ill.) gathered a team-high 12 digs to go with two aces and five kills. Seniors
Bryanna Moonen (Franklin, Wis.) and
Caleigh Smith (Marengo, Iowa) chipped in with four kills and four digs, respectively. Freshman
Sammie Abruzzo (Sugar Grove, Ill.), who made her debut earlier in the day, posted 11 digs for the Pride.
Â
PNW registered a season-high .263 team hitting percentage which featured the second-lowest total (15) errors in a match this season. The Pride also tied their season-high mark for most aces in a match with five.
Â
In the first set, PNW raced out to a 17-8 lead with Abruzzo holding serve for five consecutive points, and the Pride never looked back the rest of the night.
Â
A kill from Sanders put the Pride ahead 16-11 in the second set and the Storm never threatened as PNW captured two sets for the first time this season. The final set was all PNW after leaping out to an early 6-1 margin.
Â
LEC's Dora Olah produced nine kills and Jordan Taylor had eight to lead the Storm.
