PNW falls to Ashland in Opening Round of GLIAC Volleyball Tournament

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Purdue Northwest made its first postseason appearance in women's volleyball since becoming an NCAA Division II member on Friday. The 11th-seeded Pride fell 25-15, 25-20 and 25-19 to sixth-seeded Ashland in the Opening Round of the GLIAC Tournament.

PNW will take on No. 8 seed and tournament host Saginaw Valley State tomorrow afternoon in the consolation bracket. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. The Cardinals fell to No. 9 seed Parkside in five sets.

Erica Brohm logged a career-high kills total for the second straight outing with 12 to lead PNW. The freshman hit a solid .391 with three errors on 23 total attacks.

Sophomore Kenzie Duggan recorded six kills, two aces and four digs, while freshman Summer Clark registered a career-best 14 digs to lead PNW on defense. Senior Danielle Fowler collected 13 digs and five assists while senior Abigail Negri distributed a season-high 28 assists with seven digs. Junior's Rachel Wilkening and Bryanna Moonen each chipped in with five kills.

In the first set, PNW trailed 16-15 after battling back from an early deficit but Ashland scored the final nine points to take the 1-0 match lead. The Eagles hit .441 with just one error in the opening frame.

An ace by Clark helped the Pride out to a 4-2 lead at the start of the second set. But, Ashland gained the next five points and controlled the momentum in the second stanza.

Then, PNW grabbed another 4-2 advantage in Set 3 after a pair of kills from Brohm and a block put down by Brohm and Duggan.

The score remained within two to three points the majority of the set as an ace by Fowler pulled the Pride to within one, 20-19. However, that was as close as PNW would get in the final frame.

Brohm had six kills in the third set along with Wilkening putting down four of her five kills.
