PNW knocked out of GLIAC Tournament after surrendering pair of late goals

HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue Northwest men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 defeat to Ashland in Sunday's GLIAC Quarterfinal matchup at Dowling Park.

PNW closes the 2021 Spring season with an overall record of 4-4-0 after earning the program's third GLIAC Tournament appearance in four years. The Pride were the fourth seed while Ashland (4-4-0) entered the postseason contest as the fifth seed. The Eagles advanced to take on top-seeded Saginaw Valley State in next week's semifinal.

Isaiah Nieves scored in the seventh minute and the Pride carried the momentum with the 1-0 advantage into halftime. Nieves converted a penalty after an Ashland hand ball occurred in the box. It was the junior's team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Ashland dialed up the pressure and it would eventually net the equalizer off a corner kick in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. All three of the Eagles' corner kicks came in the second period. The visitors also held a 10-5 shot advantage in the second half.

The two teams held on defensively as both made several hard runs in a tight matchup.

Ashland would get the late game-winner from Kieran Paterson, who placed a header into the back of the net in the 84th minute. The Eagles tacked on a penalty kick goal near the end of regulation.

PNW's goalkeeper Raul Garrido Garcia finished with four saves, including three crucial stops in the second half. AU keeper Jakob Henriksen recorded three saves.
