Box Score MIDLAND, Mich. – Sixth-seeded Purdue Northwest Women's Tennis rode a blistering start in doubles play to a 4-2 victory over No. 7 seed Ashland Saturday in the GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament.
"You look to open up a team lead any time you start by taking the doubles point," said head coach
Lucian Tabic. "Our number one and three doubles played extremely well and they gave us the edge we needed going into singles. I'm extremely proud of the way our athletes came out and competed today."
Senior van Bergen and freshman Lopez have been a good combination for us all year and they came out executing the game plan well. The seniors at #3,
Carolina Yepez and
Julia Yanes-Barrera also delivered for us. Their experience paid off several times this year in critical matches.
PNW (7-9) got identical 6-1 finishes by the duos of
Lena Van Bergen and
Sienna Lopez, as well as
Carolina Yepez and
Julia Yanes-Barrera in the first and third doubles flights, respectively, for a quick 1-0 lead in the team scoring.
Yanes-Barrera and
Nicole Uzcategui notched straight-set victories in their singles flights. Yanes-Barrera defeated Kristyn Conrad 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 6-singles flight and Uzcategui knocked off Zoe Rosu 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Ashland (4-8) took the No. 2 and No. 5 singles points to pull to within 3-2, but
Patricia Dizon would give the Pride the team win.
Dizon, a junior from Arlington Heights, Ill., defeated Huntyr Lake 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 in No. 3-singles action to catapult the Pride to the team victory.
