HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue Northwest women's volleyball team opened the final weekend of regular-season action against Grand Valley State on Friday. The visiting Lakers defeated the Pride in straight sets: 25-22, 25-21, 25-17.
Bryanna Moonen and
Erica Brohm led the Pride in kills with eight apiece while
Danielle Fowler recorded a team-high 21 digs.
Autumn Beaudoin also chipped in with seven kills and 14 digs. Setter
Abigail Negri topped her season-high assist total recorded last week with 24 helpers on Friday.
PNW jumped out to a three-point lead in the first set and remained in front until GVSU tied it, 11-11. After the teams exchanged the next five points, the Lakers created separation with a 19-14 advantage and held on for the opening victory. Beaudoin had four kills in the first frame.
In the second set, the Lakers led the majority of the frame but the Pride kept within striking distance. A kill from Moonen brought PNW to within a point, 17-16, and then the Pride trailed by just two points after a Laker error made it 20-18. But the Pride weren't able to get over the hump. Moonen and Brohm each had four kills in the second.
The final frame started off like the first as PNW raced out to an early lead. Back-to-back kills from Beaudoin and
Rachel Wilkening, followed by a Beaudoin ace pushed the Pride in front, 10-6. Then, the teams were knotted up at 16-16 before the visitors rattled off nine out of the final 10 points to seal the win.
Abby Graham had 11 kills while Karlie Kucharzyk recorded 18 digs to lead the Lakers. GVSU setter Rachel Jacquay had 29 assists.
