UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Purdue Northwest (4-11, 1-3 GLIAC) claimed a 5-4 win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader to split a pair of conference games with Saginaw Valley State (12-4, 1-2 GLIAC).
GAME 1: SVSU 9, PNW 1 (5 inn.)
PNW's lone run was a homer off the bat of
Taylor Stevens. Stevens' solo blast came in the fourth inning and made the score 7-1. The junior now has four home runs on the year.
Aubrey Shroyer led PNW with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. Shroyer,
Briana Poehler and
Amanda Noblett each recorded a double.
Saginaw Valley plated two runs in the first, one in the second and four in the third to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Five of the Cardinals' nine runs in the game were unearned as the Pride committed a season-high five errors in the field.
Starter
Courtney Blackwell (2-5) was charged with the loss, despite only three earned runs and no walks allowed. Saginaw Valley's Jaclyn Groves moved to 4-0 in the circle.
The Cards outhit the Pride 9-5 in the contest and ended the game with two additional runs in the bottom of the fifth.
GAME 2: PNW 5, SVSU 4
PNW rallied in the nightcap with a pair of runs in the fifth to break a 3-3 tie.
Jessica DeBoer scored on a wild pitch after leading off the frame with a single and
Sabryna Stanley brought in the eventual game-winning run on a sacrifice fly. Stanley finished with a team-high two RBIs.
Saginaw Valley cut the deficit to one after scoring in the bottom half, but PNWs
Jessica Weaver held the hosts scoreless over the final two innings to earn her first win.
Weaver (1-3) went the distance and allowed four hits and one walk, while posting a pair of strikeouts.
The Pride cut down the tying run at the plate to end the bottom of the sixth as the Cards' runner tried to take an extra base on an infield error.
PNW scored a run in each of its first three at-bats, before Saginaw Valley pushed three across in the home half of the third.
Montana Martinez went 2 for 3 at the dish while seven others recorded a base knock. Shroyer produced another extra-base hit with a leadoff double to start the game.
Madison Schultz and
Jocey Gault also registered a double.
SVSU reliever Kasey Bagelmann was tagged with the loss after surrendering the go-ahead run in the fifth.

PNW returns to action Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Parkside in conference action. The first game of the Dowling Park doubleheader will start at 2 p.m. CDT.
