HAMMOND, Ind. – Purdue Northwest baseball suffered a pair of losses to Grand Valley State in Saturday's GLIAC doubleheader at Dowling Park, 3-1 and 12-3.
GAME 1: GVSU 3, PNW 1 (7 inn.)
PNW (6-6, 0-3 GLIAC) scored first on the board with
Ray Hilbrich's two-out RBI single in the third.
However, GVSU (6-6, 3-0 GLIAC) tied it in the fourth and then a clutch two-run double in the fifth put the Lakers up for good.
The Pride only had two runners reach safely over the final four innings as GVSU starter Mark Scannell earned the win from the mound. The right-hander went six innings and allowed five hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Michael Barno earned the save.
PNW ace
Chad Patrick (3-1) took his first loss and had his scoreless streak snapped at 24.1 innings without a run allowed to start the season, despite another solid outing. He went seven innings with eight strikeouts and seven hits allowed. Patrick has logged 40 strikeouts with just five walks in 28.0 innings pitched. His season ERA is 0.96.
Anthony Agne led the way, going 2 for 3 with a triple.
Anthony Fumagalli and
Tyler Schultz each recorded a base knock.
GAME 2: GVSU 12, PNW 3 (9 inn.)
Agne stayed hot with a double and home run in the second game. His solo blast in the first inning gave PNW another 1-0 lead. It was his first long ball of the season and third of his PNW career.
However, the Lakers responded with a five-run second inning and added seven runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
GVSU outhit the PNW 14-6 in the nightcap with a pair of home runs by Ryan Blake-Jones and Zach Collins.
Hilbrich extended his hitting streak to six while
Luke Montgomery,
Alex Gasbarro and
Riley Gallagher each produced a hit. Gasbarro logged his first collegiate hit and RBI with a pinch-hit single to right field in the eighth inning.
PNW utilized four arms on the mound as
Joe Buikema (0-1) was saddled with the loss.
Joe Sullivan tossed four shutout frames, while
Ryan Slivka and
Noah Burgh also made relief appearances.
