HAMMOND, Ind. – Haneen Abdulla converted a penalty in the 86th minute to give Purdue Northwest its first win, a 2-1 victory over Davenport on Senior Day at Dowling Park.
PNW moved to 1-2-0 on the shortened spring campaign while Davenport fell to 0-3-0.
Abdulla's game-winning strike is the first goal of her career. The penalty shot came as a result from a Davenport hand ball in the box.
Seniors
Hailey Arlis and
Breanna Pardus were recognized before the start of the contest for their outstanding leadership and determined efforts at PNW.
Fittingly, it was Arlis who put the Pride ahead 1-0 early in the fifth minute. The Minooka, Ill. native cleaned up a rebound off a brilliant free kick by
Amanda Logan that caromed off the bar.
PNW took the 1-0 lead into halftime, but Davenport tilted the field in its favor in the second half.
The Panthers tied the score at 1-1 in the 52nd minute after Kathryn Hoeger's penalty shot deflected off PNW keeper
Leonie Heck's left arm and into the back of the net. Heck finished with five saves in the second half while starter
Bridget Grady recorded two stops in the first period.
Davenport kept the pressure on PNW's back line throughout the second half, but the Pride defense held up.
The Panthers held an overall 16-8 shot advantage with nine coming in the second period. Davenport also edged the Pride in corner kick tries, 5-1.
