HAMMOND, Ind. – Purdue Northwest exploded for 30 runs and moved to 5-3 on the year following a sweep over Parkside (0-6) at Dowling Park on Saturday. The Pride won by final scores of 10-0 and 20-9 - the total in the second game is a new school record for most runs scored in a game during the program's NCAA Division II era.
GAME 1: PNW 10, PARKSIDE 0
Chad Patrick continued his masterful start to the season with eight strikeouts in his third consecutive shutout win. The right-hander scattered four hits and only walked one, while running his season strikeout total to 32 in 21.0 innings.
PNW jumped out to a 2-0 lead on
Jake Soules' two-run blast in the second inning. Soules jumped all over a fastball and sent it soaring over the left-field fence for his first home run of the season. The Pride added two more in the third and tacked on six runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Anthony Agne (2-4, 2B,
Ray Hilbrich and
Ray Hansen each produced multi-hit efforts while
Gannon Andrews recorded his first career double.
Soules finished with three RBIs while
Ethan Imlach produced a pair and
Brett Veltema plated a run.
The Pride outhit the Rangers 11-4 with six hits coming against Parkside starter Aaron Cusimano (0-2). Austin Emanuel produced two of Parkside's four base knocks in the first game.
GAME 2: PNW 20, PARKSIDE 9
PNW led 10-0 after batting around in both the first and second with five runs in each frame.
Parkside battled back with a six-spot in the fifth inning to trim the deficit back down to four with PNW leading, 11-7. However, the Pride broke out for seven more runs in the bottom half to remain in control. Veltema and
Andrew Petsche clubbed RBI doubles while
Luke Montgomery added an RBI base knock.
Both teams pushed two more across in the sixth as
Riley Gallagher singled home both Pride runs. Gallagher finished with a career-high four RBIs along with Petsche who produced a career-best five RBIs.
Five players recorded multi-hit outings including Petsche (2-5, 2B), R. Gallagher (2-4, BB), Montgomery (2-4, 3 R, 2 BB),
Ray Hilbrich (2-4, 4 R, 3B, BB) and Jacob Soules (2-3, 4 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB).
The Pride outslugged the Rangers 14-11 in the nightcap. Parkside's Emanuel and Dominic Esposito each homered for the visitors.
Brandon Haczynski (1-0) earned his first win of the season by allowing one earned run on four hits. The right-hander struck out a pair and didn't walk a batter in four innings.
