HAMMOND, Ind. – Purdue Northwest overcame a four-run deficit to knock off 13th-ranked University of Indianapolis 7-5 in the home opener at Dowling Park. The second game of the non-conference doubleheader was suspended in the fourth inning with PNW leading 6-0.
GAME 1: PNW 7, UINDY 5
Madison Schultz,
Taylor Stevens and
Aubrey Shroyer each homered in the first game to lead the comeback against the Greyhounds.
Schultz put PNW on the board first with a solo shot in the opening frame. Stevens delivered a three-run blast to center in the third, which came in response to a three-run inning for UIndy, and pulled the Pride to within one.
Then, Shroyer provided the clutch long ball in the fifth to even the score at 5-5.
PNW added another run in the fifth to take the lead when Stevens knocked home
Allison Arnold.
Sabryna Stanley's RBI single plated
Jessica Weaver in the sixth to put the Pride ahead by two.
Stanley (2 for 3) also doubled and produced the only multi-hit effort of the game for the Pride.
Courtney Blackwell got stronger in the circle as the game went on, earning her second win of the season by retiring 12 of the final 15 UIndy batters. The senior right-hander allowed two earned runs on six hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
GAME 2: PNW 6, UINDY 0 (SUSPENDED IN BOTTOM 4TH)
Shroyer homered again in her first at-bat of the nightcap to spark PNW.
Montana Martinez recorded a two-run single in the third, and then three more runs came across for the Pride in the fourth. The rain picked up and caused the game to be halted with one out and the bases loaded.
Weaver got the start in Game 2 and tossed four shutout frames, allowing just three hits and one walk. She recorded four strikeouts.
