Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – A five-run second inning was enough for Ohio Dominican to move past Purdue Northwest in Friday's non-conference tilt at Panther Field. ODU won by a final score of 7-4 as the two teams combined for 23 hits on the afternoon.
PNW dropped to 2-4 on the young season as the two teams are set to meet again tomorrow at Panther Field. ODU improved to 4-5 overall.
The Panthers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning as a two-run homer by Braxton Downs started the scoring. Three consecutive base knocks with two outs allowed three more runs to cross. Downs also doubled in the game and led ODU at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort.
PNW didn't go away quietly and plated three runs in the next half inning.
The Pride outhit the Panthers 13-10 in the contest but stranded seven runners.
Sabryna Stanley led the way for PNW with a career-high three hits and a run scored.
Aubrey Shroyer (1-4) and
Madison Schultz (1-4) each produced an RBI single while
Briana Poehler (2-2) recorded a sacrifice fly to help the Pride slice the deficit to two. Poehler also doubled and walked on the day.
Then,
Sydney Siedentopf (1-1) came through in the clutch with a two-out, pinch-hit RBI knock in the sixth to pull PNW within a run.
But ODU received some insurance in the bottom half as Carson Hackard's two-run blast pushed the Panthers back ahead by three.
PNW starter
Courtney Blackwell (1-2) was solid in the circle outside of the two blemishes. She scattered five combined hits over the final four innings after giving up five hits total in the second frame. The right-hander finished with six strikeouts and only two walks, limiting the Panthers to 2-for-11 hitting with runners in scoring position.
ODU's Olivia Rettke (4.0 IP) earned her first win in three starts and was only charged with one earned run. Addison Smodilla tossed the final three innings in relief for the Panthers.
