PARK FOREST, Ill. – The Purdue Northwest men’s and women’s tennis teams opened the season Saturday against Tiffin at the Park Forest Tennis Club. The Pride men’s team won 5-2 while the women’s team fell in a close match, 4-3.
For the men, PNW bounced back from losing the point in doubles play by claiming five of six singles matches in the victory. The top three singles matches were sweeps for the Pride.
- Miguel Flores won the opening set at No. 1 singles in a tiebreaker over Tiffin’s Michael Gurtner before rolling in the second set, 6-1.
- Leon Kah defeated Joe Gillman, and Luca Kirchhoff recorded a win over Matt Telford, at No. 2 and No. 3 singles respectively.
- Levent Evyapan won 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth lineup spot over Matt Saunders, while Marcos Diaz edged Gabe Oliveira in a tight match at No. 5 singles by scores of 5-7, 6-2, 10-8.
- Paul Hawes fell to TU’s Cyrille Colomb at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
- In doubles play, Tiffin won all three matches by final scores of 6-4, 6-4, 6-1.
- PNW's Flores and Evyapan teamed up in the No. 1 matchup against Tiffin's Gurtner and Oliveira.
On the women’s side, the decisive doubles point came down to the No. 3 match as TU’s Abbie Jude Riley and Shea Foster snuck past PNW’s Julia Barrera and Carolina Yepez, 7-6.
- The two teams split the other two doubles matchups with PNW’s Lena Van Bergen and Sienna Lopez taking the top spot, 6-2.
- PNW also claimed wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles.
- Lopez won 7-5, 6-1 over TU’s Anais Geslin in the second spot while Patricia Dizon and Barrera each earned a hard-fought victory.
- Dizon won at No. 3 singles over TU’s Alessandra Maganuco, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
- Barrera defeated TU’s Foster by overcoming a first-set loss, 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.
