PARK FOREST, Ill. – Purdue Northwest earned a split with Walsh University in tennis action at the Park Forest Tennis Club on Sunday morning.The PNW men's tennis team improved to 2-3 on the young season with a 4-3 victory of the Cavaliers. The Pride women's tennis team (2-4) dropped a 5-2 decision.
Walsh (4-4) opened the men's series by taking the doubles point, but the Pride were able to regain their composure to take four of the six singles flights.
Leon Kah,
Luca Kirchhoff and
Levent Evyapan cruised to straight set wins in their respective flights. Kah blitzed past Joao Campos 6-2, 6-2 for his fourth singles win of the season in five outings. Kirchhoff nearly mirrored Kah's result as he defeated Clemens Wagner 6-2, 6-3. Kirchhoff is now 3-2 individually. Evyapan got the better of Alex Medina 6-2, 6-4 for his second victory in singles action.
The decisive series in the match was the No. 6-singles flight between PNW's
Jonas Franssen and Walsh's Dawson Drummond.
Drummond won the first set 6-4, but Franssen took the second set 6-2 to force a third set. With the third set tied a 6-6, Franssen was perfect in the tiebreaker to secure the individual and team win.
The PNW women's tennis team got out to a strong start in their match by taking the doubles point with easy wins in the top two flights.
Lena Van Bergen and
Sienna Lopez took the No. 1-doubles flight 6-1 over Katharina Razum and Sofia Khairutdinova while the Pride tandem of
Nicole Uzcategui and
Patricia Dizon (PNW) knocked off Nicole Beidacki and Maria Kacalova 6-2 in No. 2 doubles action.
Lopez rode the momentum she gained in her doubles match to earn her third singles win of the season in a 6-2, 6-1 dismantling of Razum.
Walsh would take the five other singles flights to improve to 5-3 on the season.
NEXT UP
The men's tennis team will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to nearby Plainfield, Illinois to take on Lewis University at the Five Star Tennis Complex.
The women's tennis team will also be on the road, but will travel to Fayette, Iowa, to take on Upper Iowa at the UIU Tennis Complex on Saturday.
