Rebounding, free throws slow PNW in second half Saturday

HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue Northwest women's basketball team hosted Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) foe Davenport University the for the second time in as many days on Saturday afternoon at John Friend Court.

Despite holding the Panthers to under 40% shooting in three of the game's four quarters, the Pride (2-4, 2-4 GLIAC) fell to Davenport (2-4, 2-4 GLIAC) 76-67, splitting the two-day series.

Sophomore guard Savaya Brockington led the Pride with 23 points, her second straight game eclipsing the 20-point mark. Brockington also played all 40 minutes while tallying five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Senior forward Danielle Nenning (12 points), and sophomore guards Kennedy Jackson and Anjel Galbraith (10 points each) also scored in double-figures. Nenning added in five rebounds and a team-high five assists. In addition, Nenning and Galbraith chipped in two steals each.

Davenport was held to just 38.2% shooting from the floor and 18.8% from three-point range (3-of-16), by far the Pride's best defensive output of the season on the perimeter. The free throw line was the biggest difference in the loss, with Davenport attempting 25 more foul shots than PNW and converting on 93.9% of those changes (31-of-33). The 33 attempts was a season-high against the Pride. In addition, the Panthers were strong on the glass, out rebounding PNW 39-32 overall and 20-14 in the second half.

A fast start to the game buoyed Purdue Northwest, as the team started play with a 7-0 run and held the Panthers scoreless over the first 3:26. Galbraith led the team over the first 10 minutes with eight first quarter points, keeping the Pride on top 20-17 as Davenport's offense began to click. The Panther bench, lead by freshman post Isabella Starzyk (six first-half rebounds), used its energy to put the visitors briefly ahead early in the second quarter. However, Brockington scored eight points over the final 4:40 of the first half to give PNW a 37-32 lead at the break.

The Panthers were able to slow down the pace of the game to start the second half, drawing fouls and getting into the bonus for the last four minutes of the third quarter. While Brockington continued to stop DU runs with seven point third-quarter, a 10-0 free throw disparity led the Panthers to a 51-50 lead heading into the fourth.

After the Davenport lead reached as high as six, the Pride clawed back to pull to within two with 2:08 remaining on a three-pointer by Nenning. Davenport answered with an 8-1 run over the remainder of the game, making six straight free throws in that span.

For the visitors, sophomore forward Emily Lange led the Panthers in scoring for the second-straight game. She poured in in 17 points, nine of which came from the foul line. Starzyk, Loni Sales, and Taylor Opolka each corralled seven or more rebounds, with Sales also chipping in 12 points.
