TREVECCA NAZARENE 9, PURDUE NORTHWEST 0
After a travel day Thursday, the PNW Baseball team played the first of a three-game set on Friday afternoon against Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville. Although the Pride collected six hits to the Trojans' seven, they were unable to string a rally together, losing game one of the trip 9-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trevecca Nazarene scored first in the top of second inning with a solo shot over the right-center wall. In the next half inning,
Ray Hilbrich collected a single on a flare to right field with two outs and was able to steal second, putting a runner in scoring position for
Hunter Thorn, who reached on an error. With runners on first and third,
Brett Veltema lined out to center field, unable to capitalize on one of the few offensive opportunities the Pride would have during the game.
The Trojans continued to score from there, recording four runs on two hits in the bottom of the third, extending their lead over the Pride 5-0. From the fourth inning through the seventh,
Jordan Rodriguez and
Justin Walter surrendered just one hit, opening a window for the Black and Gold to cut the deficit. The Pride offense could not put a rally together however, eventually falling 9-0.
HEAR FROM HEAD COACH DAVE GRIFFIN
"We had two innings were they (Trevecca) scored big; those are innings we need to avoid moving forward. As a group, we just need to be able to shut down the other team with two outs, and hit better with runners in scoring position."
STAT LEADERS
Despite the game's unfortunate outcome, Hilbrich went 2-4 and Rodriguez pitched two scoreless innings with a strikeout out of the bullpen.
WHEN DO THE PRIDE PLAY NEXT?
