Pride Fight Back, but Ultimately Fall to the Lakers

Despite a 24-6 second half run, the Pride were defeated 72-59 on Thursday night.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Purdue University Northwest Men's Basketball traveled north to take on the Lake Superior State Lakers on Thursday night. After a massive comeback from the Pride, the Lakers went on a late run and defeated the Pride 72-59. Head Coach Boomer Roberts feels that making the same mistakes without making adjustments is hurting the Pride game after game.

"The same stuff (turnovers offensively and a couple lulls defensively) has plagued us in our losses, and we did them again tonight," said Roberts. "We fought back to take a one-point lead with five minutes to go, and then they just blitzed us. It's frustrating, but we're not going to quit."

In a back and forth first half, PNW found themselves right in the game. However, the Pride turned the ball over 13 times in the first half, resulting in 17 points for the Lakers. Those points-off-turnovers made the difference in the first half, as the Pride trailed by 13 heading into the locker room. Jyrus Freels led first-half scoring with 10 points, shooting 5-7 with five boards, while Timothy Gilmore shot 2-4 with six points.

The Black and Gold came out of the locker room with a chip on their shoulder, outscoring the Lakers 24-6 early in the second half. Chandler Spring hit three buckets from behind-the-arc during the run. Sporting a five-point lead with just under eight minutes to go, the Lakers went on a tear of their own, outscoring PNW 27-9 in the remaining seven minutes of the game. Freels finished with a double-double, shooting 8-12 from the field with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Spring had 13 points of his own, followed by Barnard, who shot 4-6 with nine points. Jordan Doss pulled down seven boards and scored five points on the night.

The Pride are next in action on Saturday, January 25 against Ferris State. Tipoff in Big Rapids, Mich. is at noon (CT).
