GRIFFITH, Ind. -- The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team finished their 2018-19 season on a high note as the Pride swept all the matches against Concordia (Mich.), 7-0, at Match Point Tennis and Fitness Club, Friday.
PNW started out winning all three matches in doubles competition to go ahead 1-0. The Pride automatically won No. 3 doubles by default.
Freshman Kelli Canul (Munster, Ind./Munster) and senior Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) picked up the victory at No. 2 doubles against Concordia's Taylor Kahlstorf and Tina Perumalla, 6-0. Sophomore Lena van Bergen (Wesel, Germany) and freshman Patricia Dizon (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) captured the sweep at doubles for PNW as the duo defeated Kaylee Tucker and Charity Felton at No. 1 doubles, 6-1.
Going ahead 1-0 heading into singles competition. PNW won all six matches at singles play.
Basu-Chavez recorded her last victory at PNW, picking up the win at No. 5 singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. van Bergen nearly pulled off the complete sweep at No. 1 singles, defeating her opponent, 6-0, 6-1.
Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) only lost one game and it came in the opening set as the junior won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Canul had total control of her match at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Dizon closed out the match for the Pride winning in back-to-back sets at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-0. PNW won at No. 6 singles by default as Concordia ran out of players.
PNW women's tennis concludes their 2018-19 season at 5-14 in their second season in the Great Lakes Athletic Intercollegiate Conference.
