Box Score 2 HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue University Northwest softball team won today's double header over Wisconsin Parkside on Senior Day, as the Pride won the first game, 12-7 and 3-2 in extra innings in Game 2.
Game 1: PNW 12, Parkside 7
A sacrifice fly from senior Kalyn Learnard (Fairmount, Ill./Catlin) that plated Heather O'Kelly (Worth, Ill./Shepard) gave the pride an early 1-0 advantage.
The Pride put together a 7-run second which started after senior Mia Stevens (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) singled to left field that scored seniors Shailen Johnson (West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) and Tessa Steffens (Litchfield, Ill./Litchfield).
Heather O'Kelly and seniors Zoee Anderson (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Jefferson) and Kalyn Learnard each recorded rbi-hits followed by a sac fly from Senior Taylor Kotzo (Munster, Ind./Munster) which put the Pride ahead, 8-0.
Senior Lauren Maynard (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) added to the Prides lead after a double drove in Stevens to put the Black and Gold ahead 10-0.
The Rangers would score two runs in the top of the fourth, but back-to-back RBI doubles from seniors Shailen Johnson and Olivia Sardella (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) put the Pride ahead, 12-2. After Kotzo doubled, senior Taylor Mendenhall (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) was able to move her to third base, which helped her later score on the Johnson double. Johnson later scored on the Sardella Double.
Parkside would try and mount a comeback, but Stevens was able to close it out for her seventh win in the circle as the Pride went on to win, 12-7.
Game 2: PNW 3, Parkside 2 (8 innings)
Parkside scored one run in the third and sixth inning to go up 2-0, but the Pride answered back in the bottom of the sixth.
Freshman Madison Schultz (Lafayette, Ind./Faith Christian) evened the score at two runs a piece after a she crushed a homerun over the left field fence that plated senior Zoee Anderson (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Jefferson).
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, Amanda Noblett (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) came up with a clutch game-winning single that scored senior Kalyn Learnard (Fairmount, Ill./Catlin) to give the Pride a 3-2 win to complete the sweep in extra innings.
Sophomore Courtney Blackwell (Whiting, Ind./Whiting) recorded her 11th win of the season in the circle throwing a complete game with five strikeouts.
The Pride honored nine seniors today after their sweep of the Rangers; #00 Taylor Mendenhall, #2 Tessa Steffens, #3 Taylor Kotzo, #7 Shailen Johnson, #14 Kalyn Learnard, #16 Zoee Anderson, #17 Olivia Sardella, #24 Mia Stevens and #28 Lauren Maynard.
The Pride return to action Tuesday, April 23 when PNW faces off with Wayne State in Detroit, Mich. in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 pm (CST).
