HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue Northwest softball team split a double header Sunday afternoon as they welcomed in the Davenport Panthers for a conference showdown. DU won the first game 8-0, while PNW cleaned up in the second game, winning 13-4.
GAME ONE
Davenport came out aggressive in the first game, as Kennedy Crawford drove home the first run of the game on an RBI single. They got two more runs in the fourth, started after Crawford advanced on an error from pitcher Courtney Blackwell.
The Panthers shut the door on the contest as they put up four runs in the top of the fifth and won the first game on a mercy rule after five innings, DU taking it 8-0.
The Pride offense managed just two hits as they had no answer for Mallory Teunissen, who went five scoreless innings walking just one and striking out six.
GAME TWO
After Davenport got the first run once again in the second game, PNW fired back as Amanda Noblett slapped a double into left field scoring Taylor Mendenhall to even the score in the bottom of the second.
The Pride got two more in the third inning as Ashley Bravo and Taylor Mendenhall each got RBI singles making the score 3-1.
DU roared back with three in the fourth inning, but Purdue Northwest ended it in the bottom of the fifth. They scored 10 runs, including RBI singles from Bravo, Mia Stevens, Noblett, and Heather O'Kelly. After Kalyn Learnard walked bringing home Noblett, Madison Schultz crushed a grand slam to right center bringing on the mercy rule after five innings.
The Pride will have a few days to recover before they hit the road Wednesday to visit the Northwood Timberwolves for a GLIAC doubleheader. First pitch of game one will be approximately 3:30 p.m. CT.
