ASHLAND, Ohio -- Senior Moritz Gisy (Duesseldorf, Germany) and Gregory Kvint (Philadephia, Penn./Lower Moreland) won at No. 1 doubles against the No. 18 doubles team in the country in Ashland's Stuart Brdicka and Jordan Phelps as the Purdue Northwest men's tennis team dropped their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season opener at Ashland on Saturday.
Ashland won the final two doubles matches to take the 1-0 lead going into singles matches. Sophomores Leon Kah (Munich, Germany) and Dru Kennedy (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) fought hard at No. 2 doubles against Ashland's Stanislaw Grzeslo and Priyank Soni, 7-6.
Kah came back and picked up the victory at No. 2 singles against Brdicka in a three-set tiebreaker after dropping the first set, 7-5, the sophomore fought back and won back-to-back sets, 6-0, 10-3.
Junior Jonluke Passett (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandberg) had a huge start to conference match play with a victory at No. 4 singles in straight sets against Colten Clark, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Mauricio Villacres almost pulled it off at No. 5 singles against Tche Kun Teng but suffered the setback in a three-set thriller, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4. Kvint put up a fight at No. 3 singles against Phelps but lost in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1.
Gisy won three games in each of his sets at No. 1 singles but Soni won the match, 6-3, 6-3. Passett and Villacres recorded two wins at No. 3 doubles against Teng and Clark but Ashland came out on top, 6-2.
