PARK FOREST, Ill. -- Sophomore Leon Kah (Munich, Germany) was victorious at No. 2 singles and senior Mauricio Villacres (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and junior Jonluke Passett (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandberg) won at No. 3 doubles but it was not enough as the Purdue University Northwest men's tennis team dropped a match to Illinois-Springfield, 6-1, at Park Forest Tennis and Health Club Saturday.
UIS won two out of the three doubles matches to start the match, 1-0. Villacres and Passett picked up the victory at No. 3 doubles against Alex Chan and Oscar Toro, 6-3. Kah and sophomore Dru Kennedy (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) won three games at No. 2 doubles but UIS's Logan Burgess Hayes and Matthew Lapsley won the match, 6-3.
Kah defeated Tommy Martinez at the No. 2 spot in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5.
Passett put up a fight at No. 4 singles, winning two games in the first set, four in the set against Chan, but ultimately fell, 6-2, 6-4. Senior Moritz Gisy (Duesseldorf, Germany) won a pair of games in each of his sets but Sam Clarke picked up the victory at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
Villacres won three games in the opening set at No. 5 singles but Lapsley came out on top and won at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Gregory Kvint picked up a pair of games in the first set but Burgess Hayes came out and won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
PNW returns to action Sunday, March 17 as the Pride host Midland (Neb.) with match time scheduled at 10 a.m. CT.
