SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - - The Purdue Northwest Women's Basketball team took on the Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars in the finale of the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Classic on Saturday evening. PNW got double-digit scoring out of
Danielle Nennig (Wrightstown, Wis./Wrightstown) and
Molly Devalkenaere (Milwaukee, Wis./Brookfield), but UIS shot 42-percent from the field and won the game 65-52.
"Danielle and Molly played really well," Head Coach
Courtney Locke said. "They were aggressive around the basket, which we needed."
Nennig finished with 11 points, six rebounds, one assist and one steal while Devalkenaere had 11 points, five rebounds and two steals. Both also connected on one three-pointer and made two free-throws.
Other statistical leaders for the Pride included Freshmen
Anjel Galbraith (Vallejo, Cal./Salesian College Prep) and
Savaya Brockington (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central). Galbraith played all 40 minutes, scored six points, dished out four assists and gathered two rebounds. Brockington recorded seven points, five rebounds, two blocks, one steal and had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4:0.
"Anjel was our floor general tonight," Locke said. "She was locked in on defense, which is a must for our team."
Locke believed her team fought hard this evening. "I really like our effort," she said. "We're getting wide open shots, we just have to knock them down and get a few more stops at crucial points in the game. It's a process and I'm looking forward to growing next week."
PNW Women's Basketball hosts Lincoln College on Tuesday, November 12, in the home opener. Tipoff at the Fitness and Recreational Center in Hammond is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CT). Â
