PNW Men's Basketball Takes Overtime Win in California

The Pride clinched an 81-77 win against Dominican University of California

CARSON, Cal. -- The Purdue University Northwest Men's Basketball team traveled across the country to California, starting off two days of competition against Dominican University of California. In a battle that came down to a 65-65 tie with a little over seven seconds on the clock in regulation play, the Pride and the Penguins carried the contest into overtime where the Pride clinched the win with a final score of 81-77.

The Pride were led on the scoresheet by No. 32 Jyrus Freels who saw 34 minutes on the court where he brought home 22 points, 12 rebounds and a steal. No. 2 Gregory Boyle sank 12 points, No. 22 Gabe Toombs scored 10, and No. 3 Chandler Spring and No. 21 Timothy Gilmore each score 9 points. As a team, the Pride shot  7-16 from behind the 3-point arc and 14-26 from the free thrown line.

"Any time you fly across the country and get a win the following day, it's a great win," said Head Coach Boomer Roberts. "We held them to 33% from the field, and I loved our effort on the glass. We had slow starts in both halves, but our bench was terrific tonight. Jyrus, Chandler, and Tim made some big plays down the stretch. It wasn't always pretty, but winning programs find ways to win. I'm proud of our group for continuing to compete. We've got a quick turnaround for another big one tomorrow and Dominquez Hills is very good."

The Pride were able to open up a small lead over the Penguins in OT, but it was the late 3-point shot by Spring that opened this up, followed quickly by a layup from Freels to put PNW's lead 74-71 with 39 seconds left to play. The final thirty seconds the game saw layups traded back and forth between the two teams until the final whistle.

PNW will be back in action tomorrow at 5 p.m. (CT) when they take on California State University, Dominguez Hills.
