Three Players Reach Double Figures; Women's Basketball Loses Contest to Michigan Tech Thursday

HAMMOND, Ind. -- Sophomore Danielle Nennig (Wrightstown, Wis./Wrightstown) recorded 11 points which led the way, sophomore Tayler Vauters (Rockville, Ind./Riverton Parke) scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds and junior Shae Rhonehouse (Fremont, Ind./Fremont) added 10 points off the bench as the Purdue University Northwest women's basketball team lost to Michigan Tech at the Fitness and Recreation Center, 67-49, Thursday.

Michigan Tech had an early lead in the beginning stages of the contest, outscoring PNW 15-13, in the opening quarter. Freshman Molly DeValkenaere (Milwaukee, Wis./Brookfield) put the Pride back on top as she started the second quarter with a layup and three-pointer to make it 18-15 with 8:23 left in the period.

With the score tied at 20, Vauters nailed a trifecta to make it 23-20 with 6:03 left to go before halftime. Later in the half, Vauters made it 32-29 with her layup with under a minute left to go before the break. Michigan Tech had the answer scoring the next three points to tie it going into halftime. 

Nennig capped off a 4-0 run with her layup to make it 37-33 which began the second half. However, the Huskies had the answer scoring the next seven points to go ahead 40-37 but Rhonehouse hit a jumper from downtown to tie it at the 2:55 mark in the third quarter.

Michigan Tech scored the next four points and held PNW off the scoreboard to go into the final quarter leading 44-40 which carried momentum into the fourth. The Huskies started the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to go ahead 51-40 with eight minutes left. 

Rhonehouse put PNW back in the game scoring the next five points including an and-1 layup and a pair of free throws to make it a six-point game (45-51) with 7:20 left to go. A minute later, Rhonehouse cut it to 52-47 with her layup at the 6:19 in the game. 

The Huskies scored the next 11 points to make it 63-47 with 2:31 in the game then PNW ended the run after freshman Kelli Damman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) hit a layup.

PNW returns to action Saturday, February 2 as the Pride host Northern Michigan starting at 3 p.m. CT, following the men's game.
