Box Score WESTVILLE, Ind. -- The Purdue University Northwest women's basketball team put up a fight but the Pride were unable to pick up the victory in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Saginaw Valley State Thursday.
The Cardinals (2-10, 2-3 GLIAC) defeated the Pride (2-9, 0-5 GLIAC), 48-45, at the James B. Dworkin Student Services and Activities Complex inside the H.D. Kesling Gymnasium.
Junior Shae Rhonehouse (Fremont, Ind./Fremont) led the way for the Pride with 10 points. Junior Bayley Goodman (Fowler, Ind./Benton Central) added nine points. Molly DeValkenere (Milwaukee, Wis./Brookfield) came up short on picking up a double-double on the night, recording nine points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
PNW started out the game on a 14-5 run after a jumper by Rhonehouse before the Cardinals nailed a three-pointer to end the quarter to make it 14-8.
SVSU started the quarter making a layup to make it 14-10 before the Pride scored the next four points including a three-pointer by Goodman to make it 18-10. Tayler Vauters (Rockville, Ind./Riverton Parke) was able to find Goodman for another trifecta to make it 21-11. Vauters hit a huge layup to make it 26-15 to end the first half.
The Cardinals started the second half on an 8-0 run to make it 26-23 with 6:18 left in the 3rd quarter. PNW responded with a 5-0 run the next two minutes as DeValkenere hit a layup to make it 31-23 but SVSU took control the rest of the way as the Cardinals made a 7-2 run to end the third quarter with the Pride leading 33-30.
Kaitlyn Geers gave Saginaw a 41-40 advantage with her layup with 3:27 left to go in the game, which was their first lead since scoring the opening points of the game. Hannah Settingsgaard gave the Cardinals their biggest lead of the night with her layup to make it 46-41 with 1:31 to go.
DeValkenere cut it the deficit to 47-45 with 12 seconds left. After SVSU split the ensuing free-throws to go ahead by three, 48-45. Goodman tried to tie it with seven seconds but her three came up short to end the game.
Abby Duffy led the Cardinals with a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 21 rebounds.
PNW has a quick turnaround as the Pride travel to Northwood to take on the Timberwolves starting at noon (CT).
