GRIFFITH, Ind. -- The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team defeated Judson, 5-2, Saturday.
The Pride (2-0) defeated the Eagles (0-1), 5-2, at Match Point Tennis and Fitness Club in Griffith, Ind., Saturday.
PNW started off the match on a strong note, winning all three matches in doubles competition. Freshmen Pia Schmedding (Hamburg, Germany) and Giulia Castiglini (Lugano, Switzerland) won at No. 2 doubles against Judson's Ellen Binnon and Martha Banda, 8-1.
Junior Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Senior Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) won at No. 3 doubles against Judson's Diana Romero and Georgia Redmond, 8-2. Sophomore Lena van Bergen (Wesel, Germany) and Freshman Patricia Dizon (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) had a back-and-forth battle with Judson's Irina Iacob and Sofia Garza but PNW came out on top 9-7.
Castiglinoni continued her winning ways at No. 2 singles, as she defeated Iacob in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Dizon was also victorious at No. 4 singles against Judson's Banda in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Yepez and Canul's matches were unfinished at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively.
van Bergen found hard at No. 1 singles against Judson's Garza, forcing a third-set but ulimately falling in a three-set thriller, 7-6, 2-6, 10-5. Schmedding fought her way back at No. 3 singles, forcing a third set at No. 3 singles but Judson's Ellen Binnion won the winner-take-all final set and the match, 1-6, 6-3, 10-4.
