GRANDVILLE, Mich. -- The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team dropped a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match to Grand Valley State Sunday.
The Lakers (3-0, 3-0 GLIAC) defeated the Pride (3-3, 0-3 GLIAC), 7-0, at the Premier Athletic and Tennis Club in Grandville, Mich.
GVSU started the match winning all three doubles to go ahead 1-0 going into singles competition. Senior Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) and junior Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) won two games at No. 3 doubles against GVSU's Livia Christman and Olivia Hanover but dropped the PNW duo dropped their match 6-2.
Freshman Patricia Dizon (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) lost her match at No. 4 singles, won four games in the first set and one in the second but lost her match against GVSU's Marija Leko, 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Anna Wachowski (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) won two games in the first set but dropped her match against GVSU's Olivia Hanover, 6-2, 6-0.
Sophomore Lena van Bergen won a game in each of her sets but GVSU's Madison Ballard won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Yepez won a game in the first set, however Livia Christman picked up the victory at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Pia Schmedding (Hamburg, Germany) won a game in the second set but GVSU's Marija Leko picked up the victory at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
