GRIFFITH, Ind. -- The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team defeated Goshen, 9-0, on Labor Day Monday. Three newcomers helped PNW secure victories and two of them won singles matches in competition today. Patricia Dizon (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) won at No. 2 singles, Kelli Canul (Munster, Ind./Munster) won at No. 5 singles and won at No. 2 doubles and Giulia Castiglioni (Lugano, Switzerland) teamed up with Pia Schmedding (Hamburg, Germany) at No. 1 doubles and picked up the victory.

In doubles competition, PNW got off to a hot start, winning all three matches. Freshman Castiglioni and freshman Schmedding won every game of their match at No. 1 doubles against Goshen's Victoria Oakes and Chloe Woodward, 8-0. 

Canul and Sophomore Anna Wachowski (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) only dropped one game in their match as the duo defeated the Maple Leafs' Natalie Iholtz and Ashley Arroyo, 8-1. Junior Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and senior Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) picked up the victory at No. 2 doubles against Goshen's Hannah Behm and Mags Dutchersmith, 8-2. 

Later on, PNW continued their winning ways at singles competition. Dizon won at No. 2 singles against Woodward in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Canul won at No. 5 singles against Arroyo also winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.

Yepez picked up the victory at No. 3 singles against Behm in consecutive sets, 6-2, 6-0. Wachowski defeated Dutchersmith at No. 6 singles in back-to-back sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Schmedding was also victorious at No. 1 singles as she defeated Oakes in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Basu-Chavez fought off Iholtz at No. 4 singles by winning in consecutive sets, 6-1, 7-5.

PNW returns to action Saturday, Sept. 8 as part of the Purdue Northwest Fall Sports Festival at Dowling Park, the Pride will take on Judson University at Community Hospital Tennis Complex with match time scheduled for 11 a.m.
