HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Purdue University Northwest women's dropped a hard-fought Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match to Northwood on Sunday.
The Timberwolves (2-0, 2-0 GLIAC) defeated the Pride (3-2, 0-2 GLIAC), 7-0, at the Community Hospital Tennis Complex inside Dowling Park.
Northwood started off the match sweeping doubles competition to give the Timberwolves the early 1-0 advantage going into singles matches. Giulia Castiglioni (Lugano, Switzerland) and Pia Schemmeding (Hamburg, Germany) won two games at No. 2 doubles but Northwood's Kate Berestovenko and Iryna Trystan pulled out the victory, 6-2.
Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) fought hard at No. 5 singles, winning three games in the first set and winning two in the second but Northwood's Trystan picked up the victory, 6-3, 6-2. Schmedding won two matches in the first set and one in the second at No. 3 singles but Northwood's Berestovenko was victorious in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
