PARK FOREST, Ill. – Brooke Foltz (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) and Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) won their matches at singles competition but it was not enough as the Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team dropped a road match to No. 19 ranked in NAIA Olivet Nazarene Friday.
The Tigers (2-1) defeated the Pride (6-14), 6-3, at the Park Forest Tennis and Health Club.
ONU started the match winning all three matches in doubles competition. Abigail Kvachkoff (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) and Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) came up close at No. 3 doubles before falling to ONU's Anna Belschner and Mikaela Coose, 9-8.
Pia Schmedding (Hamburg, Germany) won at No. 3 singles against ONU's Anna Belschner in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Foltz picked up the victory in straight sets at No. 2 singles against ONU's Dana Huck, 6-2, 6-3. Basu-Chavez was able to win at No. 5 singles after edging Amanda Eberly out in the first set, 7-5, she came back and won the second set, 6-2.
Abigail Kvachkoff (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) fought hard at No. 6 singles, forcing a three-set tiebreaker but ultimately fell to ONU's Mikaela Coose, 6-0, 7-6 (7-2). Anna Wachowski (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) was able to win two games in the first game but dropped her match at No. 4 singles against Anna Kuechenberg, 6-2, 6-0.
Lena van Bergen (Wesel, Germany) nearly pulled off the first set but then ended up dropping her match to ONU's Victoria Monakhova, 7-5, 6-0.
Foltz and van Bergen won four games at No. 1 doubles but the duo lost to ONU's Monakhova and Kuechenberg, 8-4. Wachowski and Schmedding picked up two games in their match at No. 2 doubles but ultimately fell to ONU's Huck and Eberly, 8-2.
PNW returns to action Sunday, March 18 as the Pride take on the University of Southern Indiana at Match Point Tennis and Fitness Club with match time scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
