SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team put up a fight, but ultimately fell on the road to University of Illinois-Springfield (UIS) at the Springfield Racquet and Tennis Club on Saturday. The Prairie Stars (6-2) defeated the Pride (6-13), 9-0.
UIS started the match by winning all three matches in doubles competition. Brooke Foltz (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) and Lena van Bergen (Wesel, Germany) came up close at No. 1 doubles against UIS's Jane Carter and Ana Boza Martin after winning five games, but dropped their match, 8-5. Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) and Abigail Kvachkoff (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) won three games at No. 3 doubles, but lost to Maegan Flight and Kate Dumstroff, 8-3.
Later on, Kvachkoff forced a three-set tiebreaker at No. 6 singles, but Hannah Blythe took the winner-take-all third set and the match, 3-6, 6-2, 10-1. Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) won two games in the first set and one in the second at No. 3 singles, but ultimately fell to UIS's Flight, 6-1, 6-2.
van Bergen dropped her match despite picking up a couple of wins in the second set at No. 2 singles against Kena Bere, 6-1, 6-2.
PNW returns to action next Friday, March 2 as the Pride travel to Park Forest, Ill., to take on No. 19 (NAIA) Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) with match time scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
