LOCKPORT, Ill. - Abigail Kvachkoff (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) and Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) won at No. 3 doubles, 8-1, then later Kvachkoff won at No. 6 singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0 and Anna Wachowski (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) won in straight sets 6-0, 6-2, but it was not enough as the Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team dropped a close match, 5-4, against University of St. Francis (Ill.) at Challenge Fitness in Lockport, Ill. Saturday.

USF led 2-1 after taking two matches in doubles competition. Basu-Chavez and Kvachkoff won at No. 3 doubles against USF's Alyssa Lauren and Michelle Robert, 8-1.

Pia Schmedding (Hamburg, Germany) won her first match for PNW at No. 4 singles in straight sets after only dropping two games in the first set, she did not look back in the second and won 6-2, 6-0. Wachowski won her match at No. 5 singles against Michelle Robert in dominating fashion in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Kvachkoff won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. 

The game deciding match came at No. 2 singles where Lena van Bergen (Wesel, Germany) dropped a hard fought three-set tiebreaker to USF's Merle Schlaeger, 1-6, 6-0, 7-6 (8-6). 

PNW returns to action Friday, Feb. 23 as the Pride take on Concordia (Mich.) at Match Point Tennis and Fitness Club in Griffith, Ind., match time scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
