HOMEWOOD, Ill. – The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team dropped its match against NCAA Division I opponent Chicago State Friday.
The Cougars (3-7) came out on top, 7-0, against the Pride (5-11) at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club Friday evening.
Chicago State started the match winning three straight in doubles competition. PNW put up a fight at No. 1 doubles as Brooke Foltz (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) and Lena van Bergen (Wesel, Germany) dropped a close match to Chicago State's Anastasiia Goncharova, 7-5.
van Bergen went back to compete at No. 1 singles and won three games in the first set and two in the second, but ultimately fell against Chicago State's Mariya Kostyuk, 6-3, 6-2. Foltz fought hard and bounced back after dropping the first set, 6-0, almost forcing a three-set tiebreaker, but dropped the second set, 6-4, against Chicago State's Lorea Gamboa.
Pia Schmedding (Hamburg, Germany) won three games in the first set, but dropped her match in two sets to Chicago State's Leshia Gadacz, 6-3, 6-0.
PNW has a quick turnaround as the Pride return to action as they travel to Challenge Fitness in Lockport, Ill., to take on University of St. Francis (Ill.) with match time scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.
