GRIFFITH, Ind. -- The Purdue Northwest women's tennis team nearly pulled off their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory of the season but Davenport had a late rally which allowed them to pick up the win.
The Panthers (1-4, 1-4 GLIAC) defeated the Pride (3-5, 0-5 GLIAC), 4-3, at Match Point Tennis and Fitness Club. Davenport started the match won two out of the three doubles matches to go ahead 1-0.
Giulia Castiglioni (Lugano, Switzerland) and Pia Schmedding (Hamburg, Germany) won at No. 2 doubles against DU's Sophie Gossett and Bruna Ralheta, 6-3. At No. 1 doubles, Lena van Bergen (Wesel, Germany) and Patricia Dizon (Arlington Heights, Ill.) picked up two victories but Davenport's Hannah Murphy and Adeline Nelson won the match 6-2.
Dizon came back and won at No. 4 singles against Gossett in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) picked up the victory at No. 5 singles against Vladislava Shumilova. Anna Wachowski also won her match at No. 6 singles after leading the first set, 5-0, her opponent Steph Rison retired.
PNW returns to action next Saturday, October 13 as the Pride host Lake Superior State with match time scheduled for 10 a.m. at Dowling Park.
