GRIFFITH, Ind. -- Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) won at No. 5 singles and Lena van Bergen (Wesel, Germany) and Patricia Dizon (Arlington Heights, Ill.) won at No. 1 doubles but it was not enough as the Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team dropped a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest to Lake Superior State on Saturday.
The Lakers (3-4, 3-4 GLIAC) defeated the Pride (3-6, 0-6 GLIAC), 6-1, at Match Point Tennis and Fitness Club in Griffith, Ind.
van Bergen and Dizon started off the match on a positive note for PNW in a convincing way, not looking back and winning every game of their match at No. 1 doubles against Tara Harvey and Nadege Koua, 6-0. Yepez picked up the victory at No. 5 singles in straight sets against Jenay Andrews, 6-4, 6-2.
Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) and Yepez won two games at No. 3 doubles but Andrews and Allison Grandfield took the match, 6-2. Pia Schmedding (Hamburg, Germany) nearly pulled off a third set at No. 3 singles, winning four games in the second set but Tara Harvey won the match. 6-0, 6-4.
Dizon won a pair of games in each of her sets but Margo Muller won the match, 6-2, 6-2. Basu-Chavez picked up the victory one game in the first set and two in the second one but ultimately fell to Keegan Malpass, 6-1, 6-2.
PNW has a quick turnaround as the Pride host Michigan Tech tomorrow at Match Point with match time 10 a.m. CT.
