Kvachkoff Wins in Singles; PNW drops match to Ferris State Saturday

HAMMOND, Ind. -- Senior Abby Kvachkoff (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) won the second Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match in PNW history, but the Pride fell to Ferris State, 8-1, Saturday.

Kvackhoff won at No. 6 singles against FS's Adriana Fabrizio in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Kvachkoff now owns both wins at singles competition in GLIAC competition for the Pride.

Ferris State started the match by sweeping competition against the Pride. Brooke Foltz (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) and Lena van Bergen (Wesel, Germany) battled tough at No. 1 doubles, forced a tiebreaker but ultimately fell to Ferris State's Silvia Verebes and Nika Hein, 9-8, 8-6.

Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) won four games at No. 2 doubles, but dropped their match to FS's Lauren Lomax and Nicole Meylor, 8-4. Kvachkoff and Anna Wachowski (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) put up a fight at No. 3 doubles, but fell to FS's Adriana Fabrizio and Madelyn Groulx, 8-3.

van Bergen dropped a close first set, 7-5 to Ferris State's Silvia Verebes, then Verebes took the second set, 6-3.

Foltz won a game in the first set and two in the second set, but Ferris State's Nika Hein took the match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Wachowski won two games in the second set, but dropped her match at No. 5 singles to Ferris State's Arien Kissinger, 6-0, 6-2.

Basu-Chavez picked up a game in the second set of her match, but Ferris State's Lauren Lomax took the match, 6-0, 6-1. Yepez won a game in the first set, but ultimately fell to FS's Nicole Meylor, 6-1, 6-0.

PNW has a quick turnaround as the Pride host GLIAC opponent Grand Valley State (Mich.) at the Community Hospital Tennis Complex at Dowling Park on Sunday, October 1, with match time scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
