DAVENPORT, Iowa -- The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team rebounded from its skid as the Pride defeated Saint Ambrose (Iowa), 7-2, at Assumption High School on Friday.
PNW started the match on a high note, sweeping all three doubles matches against Saint Ambrose. The duo of Abby Kvachkoff (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) and Anna Wachowski (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) only dropped one game at No. 3 doubles and took the next eight to win the match against SAU's Shannon McEachern and Shannon Shovain, 8-1.
Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) picked up the victory at No. 2 doubles against SAU's Alex Horton and Elizabeth Bush, 8-5. Brooke Foltz (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) and Lena van Bergen (Wesel, Germany) held off the Bees' Griffin Rasche and Nikki Steiner in a close match, but Foltz and Van Bergen prevailed, 9-7.
Later in the match at No. 2, Yepez never looked back against SAU's Horton, who won in straight sets without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0. Kvachkoff also won in dominating fashion against SAU's McEachern, 6-0, 6-1.
Breanna Baez (Hammond, Ind./Whiting) won her first match at PNW against Saint Ambrose's Bush in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. van Bergen held off SAU's Rasche and rallied after dropping the first set, 5-7. She went on to take the next two sets, 6-3, 11-9.
PNW has a quick turnaround as the Pride return to action tomorrow morning as they travel to Fond du Lac, Wis. to take on Marian (Wis.) with match time scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
