NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team started their season off on a high note, defeating North Central College, 8-1, at the NCC Tennis Courts Saturday.
PNW started the match strong, sweeping doubles competition with wins in all three matches. The duo of Brooke Foltz (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) and Lena Van Bergen (Wesel, Germany) in her first career match won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles against NCC's Diana Barcelata and Morgan House. Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) and Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) won at No. 2 doubles against NCC's Tiffany Smolik and Reagan Scherpe, 8-1.
Breanna Baez (Hammond, Ind./Whiting) and Anna Wachowski (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) picked up the victory at No. 3 doubles in their PNW debut against NCC's Katie Legorreta and Rena Kawakami, 8-2.
Van Bergen also won first match at No. 2 singles against Morgan House in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. Yepez won her match at No. 3 singles against NCC's Katie Legorreta in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Basu-Chavez won at No. 4 singles against Smolik also in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. In her PNW debut in singles, Wachowski took care of business at the No. 5 singles spot in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Abby Kvackhoff (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) picked up the victory at No. 6 singles againist Kawakami, 6-1, 6-0. Foltz put up a fight but fell at No. 1 singles to Barcelata, 6-2, 6-0.
PNW return to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 as the Pride take on Indiana Tech at the Community Hospital Tennis Complex at Dowling Park in Hammond. The match will start at noon CT and be a part of the Purdue Northwest Fall Sports Festival, which runs from 12 to 4 p.m. that day at Dowling Park.
