UNIVERSITY CITY, Mich. -- The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team dropped their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opener to Saginaw Valley State, 9-0, on Saturday.
SVSU started the match strong sweeping doubles competition. At No. 1 doubles, Brooke Foltz (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) and Lena Van Bergen (Wesel, Germany) almost pulled off the victory, winning six games, but eventually falling 8-6 to SVSU's Shea Donahue and Taylor McLaughlin. Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) and Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) won three games at No. 2 singles, but lost to SVSU's Danielle Slonac, 8-3.
Later in the match, Van Bergen came back and put up a fight at No. 1 singles, almost forcing a third set, but ended up falling 6-1, 6-4. Foltz bounced back after falling in the first set 6-0 to win four games in the second set, but SVSU's Madeline Miller was too much and won 6-4. Yepez won a game in the first set and two games in the second set, but lost to SVSU's Joanne Gao, 6-1, 6-2.
Basu-Chavez captured a game in the second set, but dropped her match to SVSU's Taylor McLaughlin, 6-0, 6-1. Abby Kvachkoff (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) took one game in the first set, but lost 6-1 and won two games in the second set and fell 6-2.
PNW has a quick turnaround as the Pride return to action tomorrow as the Pride travel to Midland, Mich., to take on the Northwood Timberwolves with match time scheduled for 10 a.m. CT.
