SAINT ST. MARIE, Mich. -- The Purdue University Northwest women's tennis team dropped a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match to Lake Superior State University (Mich.) Saturday.
The Lakers (2-8, 1-7 GLIAC) defeated the Pride (5-6, 0-6 GLIAC), 9-0, at the Student Activity Center at Lake Superior State in Saint St. Marie, Mich., Saturday afternoon.
Lake Superior State started the match off by sweeping all the matches in doubles competition. Brooke Foltz (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) and Lena van Bergen (Wesel, Germany) fought hard at No. 1 doubles, but came up short at No. 1 doubles and fell to LSSU's Tara Harvey and Macarena Bielsa, 8-5.
Abby Kvackhoff (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) forced a three-set tiebreaker at No. 6 singles after dropping the first set and then rallied against LSSU's Jenay Andrews, but ultimately fell, 6-0, 5-7, 10-8.
At No. 2 singles, Foltz won a game in the first set and three in the second set, but lost her match to LSSU's Harvey, 6-1, 6-3. Carolina Yepez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) came up close in the first set, winning three games, but LSSU's Bielsa took the match at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-0. Cynthia Basu-Chavez (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville) took two games in the first set at No. 4 singles, one game in the second set, but dropped her match, 6-2, 6-1.
PNW has a quick turnaround as the Pride travel to Houghton, Mich., for a GLIAC match-up against Northern Michigan, scheduled for 9 a.m. CT.
